Guru Dutt and Rafi
By: Supriya Chatterji.
Guru Dutt created a thoughtful image for himself during the golden age by playing the role of sensitive characters. Whenever Rafi had sung songs for him the thoughtfulness was exhibited in every film.
In Aarpaar and Mr. and Mrs 55, songs like “muhobbat karlo”, “sun sun sun sun zalima”, “dil pe hua aisa jadoo”, had the fast numbers of OP Nayyar. All these songs became landmark hits in the mid-50s.
Gradually the songs picturised on Guru Dutt, started to have serious dimension like the song “yeh mahalon, yeh takhton, yeh tajhon ki duniya”, in Pyaasa, composed by SD Burman. Guru Dutt was a poet in the film and Rafi expressed his feelings with his tragic andaz. The film also had a dream sequence song titled “hum aapke aankho me”, where Guru Dutt was supported by Mala Sinha.
In Kagaz ke phool, the song “bichre sabhi bari bari” also was composed with a sad theme. Rafi was as elegant as Guru Dutt and SD Burman who composed the song in the film.
Rafi had also sung successful songs for Guru Dutt in the film Saanjh Aur Sawera. The title song itself was very successful.
Had Guru Dutt survived for a longer time, the combination of Rafi and Guru Dutt could have given more number of quality songs. The songs and the films should be preserved.
