Happy birthday to AR Rehman.

Happy birthday to AR Rehman.

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to AR Rehman, on 6th January, 2011. AR Rehman had remained a master composer in Indians films for more than 15 years. He received Oscar Award for his epic composition “jai ho” in the film Slumdog Millionaire. He is considered probably the best composer of the country at this time.

His variety and versatility had been exhibited with the landmark tunes given in films like Roza, Saathiya, Taal, Bombay, etc. Successful songs under his composition include “sathiya, sathiya” sung by Sonu Nigam in the film Saathiya, “dil hai chotasa choti si asha”, “roza janeman” in the film Roza, “tuhi re” sung by Hari Haran in the film Bombay, “maiya maiya” in the Guru. He had received 7 filmfare awards for the best composer only next to the genius musical duo Shankar Jaikishan who had won it 9 times. The other composers like Shankar – Ehsan – Loy, Vishal Shekhar, Anu Malik, Pritam have special regard for the versatile composer AR Rehman. He created a separate image for himself inspite of strong competition fro the above mentioned composers.

In 2008, AR Rehman gave landmark tunes in most of the films. He was sublime in the film Jane Tu Yaa Jane Na. All the songs “pappu cant dance sala”, “kabhi kabhi aditi”, impressed the teenagers with the catchy numbers.

He was totally different in Subhash Ghai’s venture Yuvvraaj. Gulzar wrote the lyrics of the film and the combination of Subhash Ghai, Gulzar and AR Rehman created magic. The songs “tu muskura”, “shano shano”, “mastam mastam” sung by Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal and other popular singers had created a lasting impact inspite of the mediocre business of the film. In fact AR Rehman compelled Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor and others to work harder for giving lips in the songs created for the respective film.

AR Rehman was even brilliant in Amir Khan’s film Ghajini. Although the film was related to the revenge that was taken by Amir Khan after his girlfriend was killed by his enemies. Sonu Nigam’s song “hai guzarish” stormed the bollywood audience even before the release of the film.

AR Rehman had been so versatile that his music in one film never matched with the music of the other film. His composition in the film Dil Se, titled “chal chaiya chaiya” sung by Sukhwinder Singh and picturised on Shahrukh Khan was totally different from the composition in the film Taal, titled “ishq bina kya jeena”, picturised on Aishwarya Rai.

Again his composition for the film Roza titled “dil hai chota sa” sung by Chitra and picturised on Madhu was totally different from the song “saathiya, saathiya” in the film Saathiya sung by Sonu Nigam and picturised on Vivek Oberoi. He had blended western tune with Indian classical music. He also composed successful music in South Indian films.

He had done experiments in the film Dilli 6, with songs like “massakali”, Jane Tu Ya Jane Na with songs like “nazren churana”, etc.

The viewers expect him to make more experiments in Indian films in the years to come.

Raavan had remained the greatest flop of the year.

Raavan had remained the greatest flop of the year.

To the surprise of lot of critics, director Mani Ratnam’s film Raavan ended up being the greatest flop of the year. The film was released on 18th June, 2010. It was simultaneously released in Tamil as well with the title Raavanan. While the Tamil version had done good business, the hindi version was not accepted by the audience at all.

The film opened with Abhishek Bacchan jumping into water from a cliff. His gang distracted the police. The policemen were seduced and killed by the gang of Abhishek Bacchan. Aishwarya Rai was kidnapped by Abhishek Bacchan. He and his brothers Ravi Kishan and Nikhil Dwivedi almost ran a parallel government in the state. Although the police considered him terrorist, the villagers loved him.

Aishwarya Rai’s husband Vikram entered the jungle with the help of forest guard played by Govinda to release his wife. He managed to get his wife back, but Abhishek Bacchan did not kill only because he was the husband of Aishwarya Rai. But after returning back, he accused her of infidelity. At the end of the film Abhishek Bacchan was killed by the police when Vikram returned back with the police team.

The music was composed by AR Rehman. The songs “veera veera”, “behene de” had the AR Rehman touch but could not recreate the magic shown in the film Roja, 15 years back. The major reasons for the failure of the film lie in the taste of the viewers. Viewers these days are fed up of stories related to terrorism, naxalite movement, maoist attack, separatist movement, etc.

While those stories amazed the viewers at the beginning in the early 90s, when Roja became super hit, with gradual way of repeatation, these stories hardly astonished the viewers. Abhishek Bacchan, Vikram and Aishwarya Rai acted well. The leading actors can forget the fate of the film and can concentrate in their upcoming projects.

The Filmfare awards were reproduction of Star Screen awards.

The Filmfare awards were reproduction of Star Screen awards.

The 2010 Filmfare awards were absolute reproduction of Star Screen awards. Big B won the award for the best actor for his performance in the film Paa. Vidya Balan won the best actress for the performance in the same. Amir Khan’s performance in The 3 idiots went in vain.

It is nothing new that Big B never won any award for versatile performances in the films Akhree Rasta, Indrajeet, Akela, etc., but when the name got converted into brand name the awards had been running after him. Same thing had happened with AR Rehman. When he composed music for Roza, or Bombay, or Saathiya, there was innovation the main yardstick of awards. These days whenever even if he creates mediocre music in Delhi 6, he gets awards. Neither is there any promotion of new talents, nor recognition for good work. Pritam, Shantanu Moitra had just created good music in the films Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani and The 3 idiots.

Among the list of manipulated awards some rewards for genuine good performances included the award won by Boman Irani for best supporting actor in the film The 3 idiots. He has potential of the same lights of Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri. Also Ranbir Kapoor won the critics’ choice award for his performance in the films Wake Up Sid, Rocket Singh, etc.

The male and female singer award does not prove anything. Kavita Seth and Rekha Bharadwaj had won the awards for the film Delhi 6. The songs were ordinary by every musical standards. Also Mohit Chauhan’s award proves nothing.

The sad part of these filmfare awards is that it had huge heritage of stalwarts like Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Balraj Sahani, Raj Kapoor winning the awards under different categories in the past. Critics even argue that there is hardly any justification of the best actor, the category should have been best hero.

The national awards still have some relevance. Filmfare awards had been a tool, either purchased or manipulated or rigged.

Did Sonu Nigam reach the level of excellence of Rafi?

Did Sonu Nigam reach the level of excellence of Rafi?

sonu-nigam
Sonu Nigam is considered the most powerful playback singer in bollywood films at the moment. The greatest debate that haunts most of the music lovers of the country is that whether Sonu Nigam had reached the level of excellence that Rafi had reached in the 50s and 60s.

The greatest achievement of a singer lies in his acceptability before diverse range of composers and lyricists. As Rafi was classically trained and could adapt any type of song ranging from qawallies to ghazals to soft romantic numbers to westernized rock and roll compositions his demand before the musical community was immense. He is probably the only singer in the 50s and 60s who had sung with compositions of all the leading composers including Naushad, Shankar Jaikishan, Roshan, Madan Mohan, OP Nayyar, Salil Choudhury, Ghulam Mohammad, Vasant Desai, C. Ramchandran, S D Burman, LP, KA, RD Burman, and others and lyricists including Shailendra, Shakeel Badayani, Hasrat Jaipuri, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Kaifi Azmi, Raja Mehendi Ali Khan, Rajender Krishnan, etc. Excepting Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar, no other singer were in close diameter of Rafi in the 50s and 60s, as due to lack of classical orientation some of the singers of specifically composer’s singers.

rafi
Sonu Nigam had sung songs composed by AR Rehman, Anu Malik, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Vishal Shekar, Pritam, Shantonu Maitra and many other composers of the present age. In singing difficult and dynamic songs his name had appeared before Udit Narayan, Sukhwinder Singh, or others, including “sathiya sathiya” composed by AR Rehman, “sandese ate hai” composed by Anu Malik, “piyu bole” composed by Shantonu Moitra, “tumko bhula na payega” composed by Sajid Wajid, “ek din kahin” composed by Nusat Fateh Ali Khan, to name a few. But there is strong competition in bollywood music at the moment and Sonu Nigam is not the uncrowned king considering the challenge posed forward by Javed Ali, Atif Aslam and many new singers.

If compared with Rafi, probably the factor where Rafi remains unparallel, were the remote compositions that he had sung with. If Naushad’s “woh duniya ke rakhwale” was pure classically oriented, then SJ’s “aasman se aya farishta” had French background embedded in them, if Roshan’s “jo wada kiya ho” had royal andaz, Madan Mohan’s “tumhari zulfon ki” had ghazal andaz. Besides Rafi had given expression to Salil Choudhury’ s tunes based on east-west blend of music, Jaidev’s urbanized folk songs, SD Burman’s rural folk songs. There is no similarity of “madhuban me radhika nache re” with “aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche” or “dil jo na keh saka”. The list can go on. The other factor where Rafi had an edge includes the standard of Indian film music reached its zenith in the 50s and 60s which is difficult to attain.

sonu-nigam
Sonu Nigam is big asset for bollywood music at the moment and has a long way to go. But those who understand music will invariably agree Rafi’s empty space had remained absolutely unfilled. Rafi-lovers only try to fulfill their thirst by hearing the singing style of Sonu Nigam which is to a big extent modeled in Rafi’s style. Sonu Nigam himself also agrees that Rafi was unparallel and will always remained the uncrowned king of bollywood music.

Viewers expect the singers of the present age to listen to Rafi’s song and improve their own level of singing to whatever extent they can.

Blue is going to be the costliest film ever.

Blue is going to be the costliest film ever.

The film Blue which is going to be released later this year is going to be the costliest film made ever in the history of bollywood. It has a budget over 100 crores and the standard of underwater shooting being done in the film can envy Hollywood directors.

Director Anthony DeSouza got inspired by Jaws and The Deep and made a thriller titled Blue which is going to be released in the later part of the year 2009. There was treasure that was hidden underneath the sea, which three friends including Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar and Zayed Khan had tried to find.

Lara Dutta had worked with Sanjay Dutt in the film. Lara Dutta had been sublime with him previously in the film Zinda. She had proved her metal once again. She even trained herself with Scuva diving before doing the stunts relating to diving in the film.

Lorenze Gonzalves, a big builder of US had trained Sanjay Dutt for his stunts in the film. Hollywood mae up artist Nikoletta Skarlattos did the make up for Lara Dutta who looked a bit different in the film. Katrina Kaif also had gave a cameo performance in the film.

She had shown her beauty in other films in the past. In Blue the viewers will see her fitness and acrobatic ability. Sunil Shetty did a great a job in the film. Akshay Kumar was brilliant as usual.

While doing his stunts, once he even collided with the body of a ship and started bleeding. The entire crew helped him during the injury to recover. Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue will also be seen in the film who had exciting scenes with Akshay Kumar.

AR Rehman’s music in the film had been sensational and he also make Kylie Minogue sing for him in the film.

In a nutshell it is cracker entertainment that is awaiting release within next two months. Ashtavinayak Cinevision again had worked out for entertaining the audience. The big budget project can land up being the greatest hit of the years.

IIFA awards are action replay of filmfare awards.

IIFA awards are action replay of filmfare awards.

This year’s IIFA awards are announced in June, 2009. Most of the awards were action replay of the filmfare awards given this year.

Hrithik Roshan won the IIFA award for the best actor for his performance in the film Jodha Akbar. He deserved it and viewers are happy that IIFA had acknowledged it. He won the filmfare award for the best actor also for the performance in the same film earlier this year. Ashutosh Gowarikar won the IIFA award for the best director for the direction of the film Jodha Akbar. He received the filmfare award for the best director too earlier this year. Films like Jodha Akbar require lot of hardwork, sincerity and monumental task with cast and crew. It is good that his immense dedication was rewarded.

Priyanka Chopra won the IIFA award for the best actress for the performance in the film Fashion. Shreya Ghoshal won the IIFA award for the best female singer for the song “teri ore teri ore” from Singh is Kinng. Javed Ali won the IIFA award for the best male singer for his song “jashne-bahara” from the film Jodha Akbar.

Javed Akhtar also won the best lyricist award for the lyrics written for songs in the film Jodha Akbar. AR Rehman won the best composer award for his music composition in the film Jodha Akbar. Kangana Ranaut won the best supporting actress award for her performance in the film Fashion. Rajesh Khanna won the lifetime achievement award at the IIFA.

Shahrukh Khan won the male star of the decade award, while Aishwarya Rai won the female star of the decade award. Abhishek Bacchan won the best comedian award for his performance in the film Dostana, while Akshay Khanna won the best villain award for his performance in the film Race.

With few exceptions almost the same recipients of filmfare awards won the IIFA awards. Some of the good work again got unnoticed, for example, for example Pritam’s music in Sinng is Kinng, Vishal Shekhar’s music in Dostana, Amir Khan’s superlative performance in Ghajini.

But again best debutant awards for Farhan Akhtar in the male category ( for Luck by Chance) and Asin in the female category (for Ghajini), are encouraging signs. IIFA should start second best performance awards for all categories to encourage better performances of all the performers in bollywood industry.

Sonu Nigam and Salman Khan

Sonu Nigam and Salman Khan.

Sonu Nigam is considered to be the most versatile singers of the present period. In the last 10 years he had sung in the films of almost all the leading stars including Hrithik Roshan, Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan. He had sung songs composed by most of the dynamic composers of the country including AR Rehman, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Anu Malik, Vishal Shekhar, Sajid Wajid, etc. But his voice matches the most with Salman Khan.

In the film Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, all the songs sung by Sonu Nigam for Salman Khan like “jeene ke hai char din” or “mujhse shaadi karogi”, became super hit. The songs were composed by Sajid Wajid and the lips of Priyanka Chopra added flavor in Salman Khan’s super hit film which was mostly picturised in the sandy locations of Goa. The songs of the film Yuvvraaj, composed by AR Rehman, last year like "shano shano" sung by Sonu Nigam and picturised on Salman Khan also was appreciated by the viewers.

Even the songs in the film Partner composed by Sajid Wajid like "maria maria" or "do you want a partner" became bumper hits. The film became super hit and the combination of Salman Khan and Lara Dutta was liked by the viewers as they have liked both Govinda and Katrina Kaif in the film.

Sonu Nigam and Salman Khan combination stormed bollywood in the film Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya. The songs were composed by Himesh Reshamiya, and Sonu Nigam’s song “just chill chill” became super hit. The lips of Sohail Khan and Katrina Kaif were as impressive as Salman Khan in the song. The other songs in the film were equally successful. Sonu Nigam Salman Khan combination stormed bollywood films in the film No Entry. Especially the title song “no no no no no no no no, no entry” piscturised on Salman Khan and Bipasha Basu became super hit. The music was composed by Anu Malik.

Sajid Wajid combined with Salman Khan and Sonu Nigam to provide hit songs in the film Heroes. The song “tera mera pyar baliye” having Punjabi andaz became very successful in the patriotic. Besides the same combination had given successful songs in the film God Tussi Great Ho. Whichever song was sung by Sonu Nigam for Salman Khan became very successful.

Previously Salman Khan’s songs in the film Tumko Bhula Na Payenge became super hit. The successful songs of Sonu Nigam included “tumko bhula na payega”, “are are yeh kya hua re”. Diya Mirza and Sushmita Sen complimented Salman Khan in the film and all the songs and the film did very good business. Even the songs of the combination in the film Janemaan, including “jane ke jane na”, “tumko maloom hai” etc., became super hit.

Sonu Nigam and Salman Khan had become a formidable combination over the years and the viewers feel that the composers and lyricists should use the combination as much as possible in films in future.

Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra won filmfare awards for best actor, actress in 2009

Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra won filmfare award for best actor, actress in 2009.

Hrithik Roshan had won the filmfare award for best actor in 2009 for his brilliant performance in the film Jodha Akbar. He won it for the fourth time. He won filmfare award for best actor previously for films like Kahona Pyar Hai, Koi Mil Gaya, Dhoom 2, etc. He had done a brilliant work and deserved the award. But some of the critics raised eyebrows in respect of Amir Khan not getting filmfare award even after brilliant performance in the film Ghajini.

Priyanka Chopra rightly got the best actress award for her brilliant performance in the film Fashion. In fact the team of Fashion won a number of awards. Kangana Ranaut got the filmfare award for best actress for her performance in the film Fashion. Arjun Rampal won the best supporting award for the film Rock On.

AR Rehman again won the award for best composer for the film Jane Tu Ya Jane Na. It was a bit strange. He had given even better music for the film Jodha Akbar, Yuvvraaj and Ghajini. Pritam, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Vishal-Shekhar had very bad luck as their music in the films Race, Rock On and Dostana were very popular and entertaining. AR Rehman got it for the 8th time. He is on the way to break Shankar- Jaikishan’s record for winning the filmfare award for 9 times.

Javed Akhtar won the best lyricist award for the lyrics of the song “jashn-e-bahara” from the film Jodha Akbar. Sukhwinder Singh won the best male playback singer unnecessarily for the song “haule haule” from the film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Sonu Nigam sang a much better song “in lamhon ke” in the film Jodha Akbar. Similarly Shreya Ghoshal won the best female playback singer award for the song “teri ore” from Singh is Kinng, ahead of Alka Yagnik for the song “tu muskura” in the film Yuvvraaj.

Ashutosh Gowarikar won the best director award for the film Jodha Akbar. Jodha Akbar was even adjudged the best film of the year. Bhanu Attaiya and Om Puri won the lifetime achievement award. Om Puri deserved it 10 years back. Other than Nasirruddin Shah no other had shown the level of verstality that Om Puri had shown in both commercial films and parallel cinema.

Farhan Akhtar won the best male debutant award for the film Rock On. Imran Khan won the same award for the film Jane Tu Ya Jane Na. Asin won the best female debutant award for her performance in the film Ghajini.

Sahana Goswami won the jury award for best actress for the film Rock On. Manjit Singh won the jury award for best actor for the film Oye Lucky Lucky Oye.

It has been seen in the past that Filmfare award has done injustice to many actors actresses composers singers in the past as well. Bhupinder Singh never received any filmfare award for best singer. Madanmohan never received filmfare award for best composer. Dharmender, Jeetender, Rajender Kumar, Pradeep Kumar never received best actor award. Whereas, Shahrukh Khan won the award for 7 times. So it is not surprising that Amir Khan’s brilliant work in Ghajini, Sonu Nigam’ brilliant singing in Jodha Akbar, Alka Yagnik’s brilliant singing in Yuvvraaj, Pritam’s music in Singh is Kinng and Race, went unrewarded. For the winners the awards can give motivation for better work. For others they should concentrate on better work, because filmfare awards are given through public choice and it is not award which is chosen by experts.

AR Rehman's Oscar rewarded his brilliant work for the last 5 years

AR Rehman’s Oscar rewarded his brilliant work for the last 15 years.

AR Rehman’s receiving of Oscar for specific song and background score of the film Slumdog Millionaire had been a reward for the excellent music he had composed in Indian films during the last 15 years. That includes the music for the films in bollywood industry and South Indian industry.

The film produced by Anil Kapoor had shown the realistic picture of the reaction of the police department whenever a slumdweller earns huge sum of money after participating in a quiz competition held in a TV Channel. The depiction of the life in a slum is well appreciated by both the intellectual viewers and also the general audience.

The background score created by AR Rehman had created theme music for the film. In fact as the film was realistic in nature there was not much scope of creating that many number of songs. In fact the Indians are very happy about the recognition of AR Rehman due to his consistent composition of legendary tunes.

AR Rehman had entertained the viewers with his innovative music for more than 15 years. His music in the film Roja, with Arvind Swamy and Madhu astonished the viewers of bollywood films a lot in the early 90s. The songs “roja janeman” and “dil hai chota sa” became super hit in the early 90s. Chitra, Hariharan and other singers contributed very well in the film Roja.

AR Rehman’s music in the film Bombay was successful as well. Songs like “tu hi re” sung by Hariharan stormed bollywood films. AR Rehman was sublime in the film Saathiya. Sonu Nigam’s song “saathiya” and other songs of the film were very melodious. A R Rehman was brilliant in Taal. Songs like “ishq bina kya jina”, “rabba jogi” etc. were unique in nature.

In 2008, all the tunes of AR Rehman were unique. The songs in the film Jodha Akbar had mughal andaz like the one “khwaja meri khwaja”. In Jane Tu Yaa Jane Na, AR Rehman catered to the tastes of the young crowds. Songs like “pappu cant dance sala”, “kabhi kabhi aditi” were full of energy and rhythm.

On the other hand the music in the film Yuvvraaj, was romantic with songs like “tu hi to meri dost hai”, “shanno shanno”. Viewers feel that AR Rehman still has a lot of music left in him. He is expected to do more experiments in the films in future after winning the Oscar award for Slumdog Millionaire.

Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra won Starscreen awards.

Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra won Starscreen awards.

Hrithik Roshan won the starscreen best actor award and Priyanka Chopra won the starscreen best actress award for their performance in bollywood films for the year 2008. Hrithik Roshan won it for the film Jodha Akbar and Priyanka Chopra won it for the film Fashion.

Hrithik Roshan had been considered as the most stylish Indian actor who had all the potentiality required to perform in Hollywood films. When he played a historical role of Akbar, the viewers were mesmerized with his royal style of performance. He was appreciated for his acrobatic stunts in the films Dhoom 2 and Krissh previously and this award will also go a long way in his acting career.

Priyanka Chopra had dominated bollywood films in 2008 with a number of releases like God Tussi Great Ho, Love Story 2050, Chamku, etc. She got the award for her dynamic performance in the film Fashion. She amazed the viewers with her various expressions in Madhur Bhandarkar’s experimental film.

Tushar Kapoor bagged the best supporting actor’s award for his performance in the film Golmaal Returns. He acted in a dumb role, but his expressions made the people laugh in the halls. Sahana Goswami got the best supporting actress award for her performance in the film Rock On.

Akshay Kumar got the Nokia Popular Viewer’s choice award for his performance in the film Singh is Kinng. Aishwarya Rai got the same award for her performance in the film Jodha Akbar. To everyone’s astonishment Akshay Kumar dedicated the award to Amir Khan for his dynamic performance in the film Ghajini.

Farhan Akhtar won the best debut male actor for his performance in the role rock on. Asin won the best debut female actress for her performance in the film Ghajini.

Ashutosh Gowarikar won the best director award for the film Jodha Akbar. Neeraj Pandey won the same award for the film A Wednesday. Both the films had very high standard of story telling and both the directors deserved the award. Jodha Akbar was adjudged as the best film of the year 2008.

AR Rehman won the award for the best background music in the film Jodha Akbar. To the astonishment of the viewers Priyanka Chopra was not present in the award ceremony, while Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Akshay Kumar appeared for the awards.

It is interesting to see whether the same stars would get the filmfare awards for the same category which will be announced later this year.
